At this very moment in 2001 a sociological experiment took place in Madrid: Robinson Project. Carried out by Quo magazine, it consisted on leaving a person undressed and locked in an empty apartment with just a computer, an Internet conexion and a credit card with only 1 MM pesetas (6.000 €) to spend, checking if he would be able to survive for a month and how.
More than a decade after, Internet and eCommerce are not trends to be proved anymore. They are part of our routine, but yet having wide development and innovation possibilities.
If we happen to make this experiment today, the diferences would be extraordinary. First, now it is not absolutely necessary a computer and an online conexion through a traditional telephone line. On the contrary, a smartphone or a tablet with a 3G/4G conexion is enough.
Second, it is unnecessary a traditional credit card as well. There are widely accepted, reliable online payment systems.
So, our Robinson could start his challenge “dressed” in just one device. On the other hand, the current variety and availability of business online is next to infinite and space-time boundless.
Let the machines do the talking
But eCommerce maturity is not the greatest change to emphasize. Breakthroughs in new technologies and communication network-based protocols allow to automate home routines, in case Robinson planned his/her shopping efficiently.
As an example, thanks to M2M intelligent technology –also known as The Internet of Things– Robinson should not have to bother when running out of food. The smart fridge itself gathers this information and sends it to one or more supermarkets' servers in order to replace those products. No operator or intermediary is needed, except the delivering service.
Reverse communication is also possible, meaning any of these stores' servers are able to send to the fridge or to Robinson´s personal device information about discounts, offers or promotions.
This is one sample, truly summarized, of the communication and interactivity possibilities we will soon enjoy not only at home, but everywhere. Available services will rise in number and precision, helping us to save time, money and unnecessary procedures.
Transparent evolution
In fact, the challenge today is not to survive a month locked at home nor to generate isolated, Robinson-like citizens. The goal is not only to make people´s quality of life get better and better, but also the resources efficiency and global sustainability. And everything flowing naturaly thanks to a close, user-friendly technology, as the video shows.
